Education Committee

The Club has established an education committee whose duties are to plan and co-ordinate educational presentations for our meetings. Starting at the November meeting, we will have a short 10 to 15 minute educational presentation at every meeting. The committee will also be in charge of all presentations, big and small, at our meetings. If you have a subject you would like to see covered in a short presentation, please e-mail one of the committee members. We want to know what you want to see at the meetings.

The committee will also be a clearing house for photo shoot locations and photo related information that is time sensitive and needs to be put out before the next newsletter. You can report your information such as migrating birds, spring flower locations, fall color locations, etc. to one of the committee members and the committee head will report to the entire club via e-mail.

Information that is not as time sensitive can be sent to me for publication in the next newsletter.

Let's freely share information between meetings.

The committee members are:

Howard Godfrey - hill@wizwire.com (committee head)
Jerry Berry - butch@usamedia.tv
Lee Whiting - leewhiting@hotmail.com

Photo Ops

These photography sites have been provided by club members. Check this item often because the best time for pictures is when the conditions are right. Please send information about particularly good places to the webmaster listed at the bottom of any web page.

For more photo ops, click here.

  • California Department of Fish and Game - Visit their web site for wildlife information - www.dfg.ca.gov/viewing/.
  • Consumnes River Preserve and Sandhill Crane Preserve - The Consumnes River Preserve off Twin Cities Road, Staten Island Rd. and the Sandhill Crane Preserve on Woodbridge Rd. feature cranes, egrets and hawks in substantial numbers during the fall months. You may even be lucky enough to see some of the Sandhill cranes dancing. You'll do best if you have at least a 300mm lens. Visit these web pages www.cosumnes.org, www.dfg.ca.gov/regions/3/cranetour and www.dfg.ca.gov/viewing/cranes.html for more information.
  • Fall Color - If you're interested in finding good fall color, visit Carol Leigh's Fall Color section of her Website at http://www.calphoto.com/fall.htm.
  • Golden Gate Raptor Observatory - The annual fall raptor migration has started. A trip over to the Marin Headlands is your best bet for capturing them with your camera. The Golden Gate Raptor Observatory's hawkwatch site is the place to go. Visit their web page at http://enature.com/outdoors/hawkwatch/hw_chart_02.asp for a chart showing the fall timeframes for the best viewing of 12 raptor species. Also visit the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory by clicking on the Hawk Hill Map link.
  • High Country of I80 - This area off I80 is good for photos of yellowing aspen/poplars. The colors vary by elevation. Some of the best color can be found at Cisco Grove and along the Truckee River as I80 winds down the mountains towards Nevada.
  • Nevada City and Grass Valley Fall Color - The Joint Chambers of Commerce of Nevada County put together a nice flyer that includes maps that show where you can find the best fall color in Nevada City and Grass Valley. Click here for a copy.
  • Sacramento Bee - Dave Henry - The Sacramento Bee has a fall leaves page at www.sacbee.com/leaves/ that is worth a look.
  • Valley Rice Fields - The rice fields north and east of Marysville attract thousands of Tundra Swans and Greater White-fronted Geese during the fall and winter months. Wander the back roads through the agricultural areas. The birds scare easily, so keep your distance and use a telephoto lens.

Dues

Placer Camera Club membership runs from September to July since the club takes an annual break and does not meet in August. Annual dues of $25 are due in September.

Web Page Banner Images

The banner images used on our web site have been provided by club members. These images will be changed periodically as more images are submitted. The provider of each banner image will be listed near the bottom of each web page. If you would like to submit one of your images for use as a page banner, please send it as an attachment to the webmaster listed at the bottom of any web page.

All images must have been taken somewhere in Placer County and must be sized to approximately 840 pixels in width (the really important size) and 175 pixels in height so they fit well on the top of a web page. If you're looking for a good size to use with the Photoshop Crop tool, try setting the width to 11.67 inches and the height to 2.43 inches. These settings will give you a slice of your image that has the proportions desired for a banner.
